Fatima, The War Nurse

    1. Theme -the poem is all concerned with surviving on the battlefield, fighters are intended to be fought for their tribe and survive the war. - When the art of medicine is adored, it is accompanied by a passion for humanity

    2. Connection
      - If someone is putting their hand on you, don't be hesitant to intervene before something goes bad. Helping people achieve their smiles is pleasurable; it will restore your faith in humanity and motivate you and your life to continue helping people especially animals. You know life isn't always as simple as we assume, so cherish the good times while maintaining humanity and respect.

    3. Re-tittle
      - The pink veiled nurse

    4. Author’s Purpose
      - The writer expresses his feeling through writing. And with that, his words drove the poem Fatima, the War Nurse to open our minds about the unimaginable continuous battle of Muslims in Mindanao and how veiled nurses felt when doing their job. The author also uses metaphors throughout the poem to immerse the reader in the sensation of being a veiled military nurse.

    5. Media’s Influence
-Yes, the poem itself has the potential to impact young people and adults to broaden their perspectives on the Philippines' cultures and beliefs. It teaches young people and adults about how veiled nurses deal with the consequences of their work as war nurses, and with that, it encourages individuals or readers to embark their knowledge with that particular place and events.

    6. Favorite line
-” She gave a slight smile behind her surgical mask” and “Pink, sequined veil covers her head. “The color relaxes The patient,” she remembers.”

    7. Figurative language
      -
"But when the forest hushes from the gunfire and grenades, She hears howls of pain, TABANG! TABANG KAMO!" The use of the phrase 'tabang,' which in the vernacular means 'asking for aid, in this line highlighted the anguish and the sacrifices made by each warrior. The author uses his intelligence in writing to make the reader visualize what really is happening in the storyline.

    8. Symbolism

      - I make a heart aid cause it is what I see when reading the poem since Fatima is the hope of soldiers and also a nurse in their camp. Veils were also a symbolism in the poem, It is a sign of liberty or freedom from males pestering Moro. Since nurses in camps must wear veils to protect themselves since they treat troops who are males. However, it isn't only a veil to shield oneself in the storyline, especially when she wears it in pink. Pink is a hue that represents care, compassion, and love for one another, and it helps patients relax since they know the person wearing it is mending them.

    9. Lines
-"In her clinic in the camp, she whispers Her prayers, hoping no one had been hurt." because the author emphasizes the nurses' concern for their personal faith in God, as well as the way veiled ladies pray for their soldiers' protection.

    10. Stanza
      - “But when the forest hushes from gunfire and grenades,

She hears howls of pain, Tabang! Tabang kamo!
Her instruments were all set, laid on the bamboo table – scissors,

Syringe, and bandages – waiting for the wounded.”

    1. Rhyme
-” The way her mother had sewn her pink abaya.

Curious eyes peeking, vision passing through amakan walls.”

“Pink, sequined veil covers her head. “The color relaxes

    The patient,” she remembers.”

-The author employs rhymes here in order for the readers to emphasize the meanings of the words used in the poem.

    1. Quatrain
      - “Repelled her, refused her care, for she was wearing a veil.

She had not removed her tondong.

She had turned to another patient, since then.

She gave a slight smile behind her surgical mask”

-In this line the veiled nurse was rejected by a patient, it's because of her wearing a veil. even though she receives discrimination for her wearing a veil on her job, she still manages her pride and used to smile and give hope to other patients.

    1. Rhythm
-A bloodied brother in front of her came with a headwound.
-Scalp grinning, slit by a bullet.

    2. Mood
-the whole poem was so tragic. the mood that this poem brings to some readers that made them sad, scared, and inspired. It's already dark, as you can read from the second stanza, I can instantly imagine the events as I read that line. The people's howl, scream, and their pitiful voices begging and calling for help. but even how dark the story was, it also inspires readers. Fatima not only gives hope to the soldiers but also her ferocity and courage in her work. she is brave and hope for warriors.

    3. Tone
-Because of the sorrow that the victims endured as a result of the conflict, many individuals lost their loved ones, as a result of a mournful tone of the poem. They describe the misery they've experienced on the battlefield as "eternal damnation," and they want to get away from it.

Prelude by Daryll Delgaldo | Poster (with definition)

Daryll Delgado, the author of the short story "Preludes" tells us the story of Nenita, and how she holds their relationship with his cheater husband. Because of the events, reading the narrative was quite engrossing. There were also a lot of words that might represent symbols, which made it a little confused, but it ended with a topic that everyone should be aware of inequity. Mistreatment of one gender by another has occurred in the past and continues to do so now.
The image above depicts how illustrates and somehow understands the story, how I envision the many events. On what are her trails and what she feels inside. As you can see, I put every scenery in one big leaf on which embellish Nenita's life as the wife of an amatorculist. The picture I inserted above is the poster I draw, and now I will tell you the description of my work. I drew a big leaf and inserted all the things I imagine while reading the story, at first, I assumed it would be a straightforward short narrative with no hidden meanings, but I was surprised to discover that I needed to think harder to comprehend it, forcing me to read it several times to completely get the storyline. After analyzing the story, the first that comes up in my mind is the wasted love which I drew the melted heart in the poster because in my critique Nenita just wasted her time with his husband who is not appreciating his love and effort. You shouldn't underestimate someone's work until you walk in their shoes. Gratitude is not deadly. The second scene is how Nenita was treated by his husband, we can imagine the bruises and Nenitas mournful bellows in this scene. While the third drawing which is the women's side profile has its role of a mother and the much love and effort for her child. In this form, we can see how our mother's sacrifices and love for us. A mother's love is the purest and most unconditional sort of love. And the last part of the leaf is the wicked plan of Nenita, in this segment is that when Nenita is planning to kill his husband using herbal medicine (dried purple leaves). Reading this line in the story made me mixed feelings, because of what her partner did, I am really irritated. He already had a wife, but he desired more. However, killing someone, regardless of the circumstances, is too much for me.
We can obtain some lessons from this story and made us realize about red flags inside the relationship. Cheating on someone has never been a fun activity, and mistreating others will not benefit you.

Prelude by Daryll Delgado (Assessment)

 GUIDE QUESTIONS:

1. What is a prelude? Why is that the title of the story?

-The word Prelude is the first part or introduction of the activity or situation that occurs before and prepares for the main event or a significant subject. The author names it as the title because the introduction of the story already recalls the past event that serves to provide the backstory or exposition for the remainder of the story.

2. What does Nenita feel for her husband? Why do you think she feels that way?

-Because she entered a ruthless relationship. A partner who underrates and disparages her attention and thoughts that would Nenita feel she is not capable of having an opinion and grant alone to pay attention against her husband's action as a result, she fulfills her position as a submissive wife without question.

3. What does her herbalista friend feel about Nenita’s husband?

-Even Nenita's herbalista friend thinks that her husband is a scoundrel. Given his history of philandering, it's difficult to oppose and neglect this judgment. but at the same time, she felt guilty because she's the one who gave the poisonous plant for nenita made the medicinal brew for her husband.

4. Who was the man that died in the first paragraph?

-Nenita's husband.

5. How do you think he died? What clues in the text helped you to reach that conclusion?

-I think it is the effect of the poisonous leaf, that resulted in him choked, heave a breathe before he sang and then collapse through his chair.

6. What is the importance of the dried purples leaves? Do you think that these were used in the story? How?

- Based on my interpretation of that dried purple leaves, it is subserved as the gun which resulted in her husband's death.

7. Who killed the man? Explain your answer?

It is not stated in the story who's the one who killed Nenitas's husband, but I guess he died because of the side effects of that dried purple leaves, as the result of his heavy movement to the music of her husband and ended of him choked and death.

8. The story ends with the feeling of heat? What are the many meanings of heat in the story?

-Heat represents passion, fury, and the oppressiveness of existence, which necessitates constant escape in Daryll Delgado's "Preludes." Delgado depicts how heat manifests itself both literally and emotionally in the narrative, which begins and ends with heat.

9. Why is it ironic that the widow was married to a judge?

-Irony refers to something that is the polar opposite of what one may predict. The judge in the story "Preludes" is depicted as despised by his people. It's odd that there's such a disparity between how you'd anticipate a judge to act and be accepted and how the judge really acts and is regarded by his community.

10. Do you think, with what happened, that some kind of justice was served? Why or why not?

-Knowing she controlled it just provided her "a really soothing sense of strength." Rather than really performing the deed, she decides to murder her husband, whom she does not love.
